The first and only edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone translated into West Frisian was published by Bornmeer in an edition of 2,950 copies. West Frisian is a regional language in the province of North Holland in the West Frisian region. The language is spoken in the province of Friesland (Capital city Leeuwarden). There wasn’t any reprints of the book as the first printing is still available to purchase from the publisher.

The book was translated by Jetske Bilker, a Frisian writer also translated works from English into Dutch (Dutch people can’t read Frisian). Although a lot of the names in Harry Potter translations weren’t translated Jetske had to translate the names into Frisian. She told me that she had particular difficulty with the first line of the book: “Mr and Mrs Dursley of number four Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.” In the end both the Dutch and Frisian translations dropped the words “thank you very much,” as the meaning in this context doesn’t translate very well. There was no original artwork used for the book as it was cheaper just to use the existing Dutch artwork—the Dutch translation being only the third translation published.
